This is a start of a series of photographs that I'll be doing on men with long hair. I like the idea of dressing these guys up in nice clothing and having them head bang. It's fun not really knowing exactly what I was going to come up with. I think the next step is to take them out on actual locations rather than the studio. I think it would be cool to see them in fancy rooms in nice clothing just head banging away. We'll see how it goes though, I found this hotel I really wanted to shoot at and was told it would cost me 5,000 to shoot there and that was their "student rate". Give me a break.

For this shoot I wanted to kind of mimic the lighting style of the no hate campaigns. So I checked a ringflash (which i never shoot with) out from the equipment room and my friend came by to model for me. All in all it was pretty fun but I don't see myself shooting like this all the time.

This photo comes from a project I started a few terms ago and have yet to finish. I took photos of the head scarf, scanned in a cut out of the silhouette, and composited them together. Honestly, I have no artistic ability in cutting things out so the project was pretty difficult. Next time I think I'll try and get an illustrator to draw them for me :P

Let him eat cake! : Photographer: Karla

This shoot was simple, had a lot of fun doing it actually. The little boy was so cute and was no stranger to being in front of the camera so it made my job so much easier. His mom wasn't too thrilled about the icing on his fingers but she let him do it anyway. The funny part is that he kept wanting to smash his face into the cake...which could have been fun except that the cake was a prop ;) so having styrofoam in his face wouldn't have been a great idea.

These are just a few fashion photos I took on campus. I brought the wardrobe and the rest is pretty self explanatory :P I took them during the fashion class and this was probably my favorite shoot from the whole term.

Week 12: Karla : Photographer

It's been a while! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and I just wanted to say I'm totally loving the type that Ophelia did on my ice cream photograph. :)
So...these two photos were part of a series I did a few terms ago. I found some really beautiful headbands at Nordstroms and wanted to do a shoot that incorporated them. I really like how dark skin photographs and I liked how the color seemed to pop. Since this shoot I've switched my focus to food photography but I think my love for color never changes. :)

Week 4: Karla Gotcher, Photographer

I have a guilty pleasure, can you tell what it is? As if you couldn't guess by looking at this photo, I have a little thing for country music. In a way it reminds me of home...where there's nothing else to do except for pile in the truck, turn on the honky tonk and star gaze for a bit. Most of the time I get strange looks from people when I try to describe the beautiful simplicity of it all but whatever :P
Anyway, finding a true country girl out here was too entirely difficult so I wound up casting an actress who swore up and down that she loved country music. Turns out that she fooled me because she was most definitely not interested in the country music blaring from the speakers at the shoot :P However, I think she did a great job of pulling off the look of a country singer which is what I was going for. Thanks to Marisa I bought this amazing floral wallpaper from a place she suggested and the styling as far as clothing, props and jewelry go was all me.

Week#2 Robert S. Evans III

These images are part of a series that I took of my friend Sean. I studied Sean over a period of about two months. Trying to create an look and feel that was going in the direction of his music. Currently Sean is the lead guitar in a thrash metal band that is residing in Lancaster, Ca. So we choose 3-4 different abandon sites out in the Antelope Valley. The project was a lot of fun.

Karla Week #2

This is the first photograph from my venture into food photography. I'm taking Pornchai's food class this term and our first assignment was to photograph tomatos. I've photographed people from the beginning of my time at Art Center so the prospect of photographing a still object was exciting, new and intimidating. Frankly, The idea that I didn't have to hire a makeup artist, hair stylist, clothing stylist or cast a model nearly sent me into a panic. I can honestly say that I'm pleased with the outcome so far and I'm excited to see where food photography might take me.

I spent 3 months photographing Jos here. He became a sort of muse of mine. I started shooting primarily at night around this time and he agreed to go exploring the Los Angeles night time playground with me. He packed his suitcase with clothes and we drove around in the wee hours of the morning discovering new and unique environments to shoot in. This is a couple of images from that series. Enjoy!
